Sheepshead are easily identified by its black vertical bands that
stand out against a dull yellowish background. The mouth is full
of large protruding teeth and the fins are heavy and sharp. Sheepshead
are usually 1 to 4 pounds but 5 to7 pounds is not uncommon. The
world record is 21 pounds, 4 ounces. Because of a mostly shellfish
diet a Sheepshead filet rivals the best. Although not very aggressive
they are good fighters using their flat shape to their advantage.
Live and cut crab or shrimp work best. Oysters and clams have been
known to work and Sheepshead will hit slow-moving jigs. Look for
sheepshead around any substantial structure, docks, bridges, jetties
and reefs.
