Gulf Flounder and Southern Flounder are very similar looking.
You will catch both species in Orange Beach but Gulf Flounder are
much more plentiful. Both species are dark brown with several spots
and blotches. The Gulf Flounder however, has three black dots that
form a triangle. One spot will be down the middle towards the tail
the other two are above and below center around the middle of the
body. Flounders average about 1 - 3 pounds. The world record is
6 pounds, 4 ounces. Flounder meat is among the best, white and flaky
filets that can be cooked several ways. Flounders can put a good
bend in your rod and the big ones are fun to catch on light tackle.
Live shrimp and small baitfish are favorites of Flounder, they will
also hit jigs and lifelike lures. Look for Flounders along grass
banks and structures as well as sandy flats.
